THE INNOVATION HUB COMPANIES THAT SPEAK TO THE NEED FOR RAPID PROVISION OF HEALTH CARE AND WELLNESS

The South African health care system has been experiencing many issues over the years, with public hospitals receiving complaints of long waiting times because of the shortage of human capital, adverse events, and economic factors. The strain within hospitals has been severely heightened by the Covid-19 pandemic and even more so now that we are experiencing the second wave.

Various health care facilities look to innovators and technology and other companies to assist with the demand and strain within the health industry. The Innovation Hub houses many tenant companies that have been stiving towards reducing the strain on the health care system with new technology as well as the use of indigenous Knowledge Systems to create products that contribute to the wellness of individuals.

Amasu Technologies, a company founded by Dr Jared Mackenzi and incubated entrepreneur at The Innovation Hub BioPark@Gauteng business incubator sort to address some of these issues with innovative technology. Their primary objective is the development of devices for the diagnosis of diseases affecting developing countries.

Their innovative technology speaks to the need for rapid provision of health care services in Africa and the rest of the world. The company makes use of a novel technology known as micro fluidics – defined as the manipulation of small of fluids, using channels as small as human hair, that allow devices to perform hundreds to thousands of tests at a time on a single device.

Amasu technology allows for a faster turnaround time on tests, leading to increased patient turnover. Allowing patients to be diagnosed and assisted at a faster rate and will cut down waiting periods in public hospitals and provide efficient diagnostics. Overall, the tech being developed has the potential to improve the health care system within South Africa and the continent at large.
