On the 1st of December 2017, International World AIDS day, the Gauteng Growth and Development Agency together with subsidiaries hosted the annual Wellness Day event. A day dedicated to promoting the holistic wellbeing of employees and aims to inspire healthy decision making and lifestyle choices. The GGDA acknowledges that the management of employees’ wellbeing is a priority, due to the increasing recognition of the impact that wellness has on work productivity.  An employee wellness program, also known as a “Worksite Wellness Program”, is a program that promotes and supports the health, safety, and well-being of employees.

The GGDA Human Capital department is currently reviewing their approach to the wellness program, with the hope that the end result will yield a detailed, interactive and thematic wellness program, which will focus on health and disease management in the workplace amongst others.

This program will highlight the mechanisms available for prevention, treatment and management of infectious diseases, occupational injuries, minor injuries and ailments, disability and occupational diseases in an attempt to reduce the burden of illnesses and diseases on the individuals and the organization.  Furthermore, the program will also endeavour to promote early entry into disease management programs to enhance productivity.

On the day in question, all members of the GGDA group convened at The Innovation Hub Precinct in Lynwood Pretoria, to participate in various activities designed specifically for enhancing and supporting the wellness of GGDA group employees. GGDA is composed of various organizations across the Gauteng Province, each with mandates of promoting and implementing strategies of regional development. The Group is composed of four subsidiaries, namely Constitutional Hill, Automotive Industry Development Centre, Gauteng Investment Center, Newtown District, Gauteng Industrial Development Zone and The Innovation Hub.

On the day members were treated to body massages and manicures. HealthInsight, one of the country’s leading corporate wellness and occupational health service providers, was present to administer wellness health checks such as, blood pressure, Glucose BMI, and HIV testing, presenting participating members with certificates once testing had been completed.

The last leg of the activities included the completion of a hiking trail set on the 60 hectares of The Innovation Hub’s expansive grounds. Once all activities had been concluded, bodies relaxed, some calve muscles sore and health checks completed, members of the group were treated to a relaxed afternoon in the December heat and provided with catering and great music
