THE INNOVATION HUB MOURNS THE PASSING OF PROFESSOR KELEBOGILE SHIRLEY MOTAUNG

Pretoria, South Africa – 13 November 2025 – It is with deep sadness and a profound sense of loss that The Innovation Hub mourns the passing of Professor Kelebogile Shirley Motaung — an entrepreneur, a trailblazer in biomedical innovation, a passionate academic, and a shining example of South African excellence.

Professor Motaung was not only a distinguished researcher and inventor but also an entrepreneurial scientist who demonstrated the powerful intersection between research, innovation, and commercialization. Through her pioneering work in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, she inspired a generation of innovators — particularly young women in science and technology — to dream boldly and pursue purpose-driven innovation.

As part of The Innovation Hub’s Bioeconomy Programme, Professor Motaung exemplified what it means to translate scientific discovery into real-world impact. Her company, Global Health Biotech, became a beacon of homegrown innovation, advancing locally developed biomedical solutions with global potential.

Her legacy is one of excellence, empowerment, and impact. Professor Motaung’s contributions to the innovation ecosystem will continue to inspire our mission of transforming knowledge into sustainable enterprises that drive inclusive economic growth.

“Her legacy will continue to inspire our mission and strengthen our resolve to support homegrown innovations that can compete on the global stage. We are deeply honoured to have walked part of this journey with her,” said Bangani Mpangalasane, CEO of The Innovation Hub.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, students, and the broader innovation community. South Africa has lost one of its most brilliant minds — but her vision and influence will endure in the innovators she has mentored and the lives she has touched.

May her soul rest in peace…. Our Rock Star!
