The Innovation Hub- an Innovation Agency of the Gauteng Province applauds two start-ups that have been recognised on global platforms for their pioneering innovations, in both the bio economy and smart industries
The Innovation Hub is responsible for fostering innovation and entrepreneurship and as such, has designed its incubation programmes to best equip start-ups in business development and acceleration.
Professor Shirley Motaung has been announced as the recipient of the #InspiringFiftySA 2018!
#InspiringFiftySA 2018 is an initiative in its second year, and has directed its efforts toward acknowledging pioneering women in the field of technology and innovation. After months of gathering stories from women in the STEM field, the Netherlands Consulate General is proud to announce this year’s #InspiringFiftySA!
Prof Motaung was also recognized at the 2017/2018 National Science and Technology Forum South32 Award, where she won in the Research for Innovation Awards category
The Professor is incubated at the BioPark@Gauteng for her start-up company Global Health Biotech (Pty) Ltd which was founded in 2015. Global Health Biotech specializes in the research and development of a medicinal plant, derived from morphogenetic factors for use in bone and joint cartilage tissue regeneration. It is a 100% black female owned company as well as a BBBEE Level 1 rated South African company with global reach. The technology has been developed at the Tshwane University of Technology.
Global Health Biotech enables the realization of scientific research concepts and offers novel alternative technologies such as La-Africa soother (LAS) and plant based morphogenetic factor (PBMF) implants that regenerate articular cartilage through stimulation of chondrocytes, synthesises of collagen type 11, responsible for tensile strength of articular cartilage and bone regeneration.
On the 31st of July the MTN IOT awards, hosted at Kyalami Convention Centre, recognised Neo Hutiri for his Disruptive innovation in health technology. Hutiri is the founder of Technovera, which manufactures The PeleBox. The PeleBox is a smart locker solution that enables patients to collect their repeat chronic medication in under 2 minutes using SMS and one-time-pin instead of waiting in the queue for hours. – reducing average waiting time for patients collecting chronic medication at healthcare facilities. He is incubated at Maxum Connect Business Incubator.
Sunkambe, also incubated at Maxum Connect Business Incubator, recently launched its music investment platform. Sunkambe is a platform that allows artists to “raise between R50000 and R250000 to record, distribute and launch an album by forfeiting a percentage – between 15-45% of future potential revenue based on an artist’s valuation” (techmoran.com). Beyond its financing capabilities, the platform also caters for the bookings, royalty collections, album sales and other commercially significant music related activities that occur within 18 months ensuring that returns are paid to investors.
The Innovation Hub is proud of the caliber of entrepreneurs that have committed to spearheading innovative entrepreneurship in the province. It is groundbreaking endeavours such as these that solidify South Africa’s position in the global community.
