Manager of the Maxum Business Incubator, Dr Jill Sawers, recently attended the Africa Incubator Network (AIN) Southern Africa Workshop that was held from 8 - 10 July 2007 in Maputo, Mozambique.
Approximately 60 delegates from across Southern Africa attended the workshop, including small business support professionals from South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola.
AIN is an informal association of incubators in Africa and is supported by the Information for Development Pogramme's (infoDEV) Incubator Initiative. AIN seeks to develop a collaborative network of African incubators and other business development service providers, and to facilitate the provision of appropriate knowledge to support the development of innovative small enterprises.
AIN's specific objectives are to raise awareness of the aims and impact of business incubation and innovation and entrepreneurship support programs; develop cooperation between business incubators, technology parks and governments in the region; foster the exchange of knowledge between business incubation managers, and contribute to improved regulations and policies that enable innovation and entrepreneurship.
Outcomes of the Workshop included actions to promote networking between the respective African incubators, and the sharing of best practice. The development of training courses and training material for incubation in Africa was also highlighted as one of the areas to receive attention in the near future.
