CoachLab™ team develops Wireless Security System with Cisco technology

Ltr the CoachLab™ Cisco team: Onkgopotse Mooke (Coachlab) – TUT (Tshwane University of Technology), Jabulani Nhlapo (Coachlab) – TUT (Tshwane University of Technology), Amanda De Beer (Cisco), Yannick Kalombo (Coachlab) - UP (University of Pretoria), Raymond Van Rensburg (Cisco), Kabelo Letsoalo (Coachlab) – TUT (Tshwane University of Technology), Xihungasi Golele (Coachlab) – UP (University of Pretoria).

The Wireless Security System developed by the Cisco CoachLab™ team.
The Cisco CoachLab™ team presented their Wireless Security System to the Cisco Coachlab mentors and The Innovation Hub Management in June this year.

The team was tasked to create a system that will use a wireless panic button to alert security officials whenever there is an intruder in an office building using Cisco's technology. On the activation of that button, a message is sent to the Cisco IP Telephone through Cisco Call Manager to the building's security official, displaying the name of the person who pressed the panic button, along with his office number, floor number, the individual's telephone number as well as the cellular phone number.

The project was successful in further enhancing the usability of the system. The Cisco CoachLab™ team suggested making use of the colour touch screen on the Cisco IP Telephone to enable the security official to have a graphical representation of the information already gathered.

Fablab, one of the companies at The Innovation Hub, played an intricate role in facilitating the completion of the project. Their equipment came in useful in packaging the hardware.

Feedback from the CoachLab™ team indicated that they enjoyed working on the project, which they found interesting yet challenging. They also learned new skills in their various fields of specialisations, namely Engineering and Information Technology.
