Icexpress - a prosthetics company at The Innovation Hub - in June this year presented an amputee, Elizabeth Hlope, with the gift of mobility: a special prosthesis for her amputated leg.
Elizabeth lost her leg nearly 20 years ago, just a week after losing her job. Unforeseen circumstances forced the Burrus family to retrench her and soon afterwards, a car accident resulted in the amputation of her one leg.
With her immutable enthusiasm for life, Elizabeth tried prosthesis soon after the accident. The harness, however, left the remainder of her leg bruised, cut, and swollen. Since then, Elizabeth has relied on crutches for support and to move around.
Trish Burrus, who had kept in contact with Elizabeth, read about the prosthesis services and innovative products that Icexpress provides in the Sandton Chronicle. Excited about the prospects of these products for Elizabeth, she contacted the company and soon there after took Elizabeth to meet them and establish how they could assist her.
Elizabeth's positive nature had such an impact on IceXpress CEO Johan Snyders that he agreed to assist in securing a prosthesis for Elizabeth. This remarkable product was fitted in June and Elizabeth now plays and interacts much more easily with her four-year-old niece, for whom she cares along with three of her late sister's children.
"Elizabeth is an inspiration to us all of overcoming situations that seem unbearable. Her choice was to stay positive and continue with life. Her outlook has impacted on all those around her. Who better to receive such a wonderful gift", says Snyders.
