The Innovation Hub tenant company voted as one of the best in SA

Leading emerging technology company, LUUK ICT, a tenant at The Innovation Hub, has been invited to participate in the 2006 Technology Top 100 awards programme (TT100) as one of the top 75 companies. This invitation comes in the wake of a number of innovative technologies developed by this pioneering team.

The LUUK team: Manil Chiba, Tobie van der Spuy (Director), Steven Wooding, Edwin Aspinall and Dustin Erasmus.

As web-based application specialists, LUUK has developed technologies that range from Internet and Intranet-based software applications and an operating platform, to hardware devices. These include active and passive RFID tags and GPS tracking systems.

Director Tobie van der Spuy says the success of these developments is based on their unique BOS (Browser Operating System) development platform that runs on the Internet and through the client's browser. "BOS is exceptional because it will run from any platform - from Linux to Windows and Mac - as long as there is a browser installed on the computer. It can be accessed from anywhere in the world, without the need for any special installations or custom configurations", according to van der Spuy.

With almost an entire suite of Internet-based applications, van der Spuy is philosophical about the risk of IP infringement by competitors. "We take all the necessary precautions in terms of protection and coding, but the key is to just be the best. We are really good at coming up with new ideas and implementing them. The reason that we are where we are is because we always keep ahead of the pack", he says.

It took one competitor about three years and 20 developers to deliver what LUUK offers and it still does not provide the functionality and benefits of BOS. "We are proud of the technology that we've developed. We have a different way of looking at things, and often clients come to us because nobody else can provide them with the solutions that they need."

When the company started looking for new premises, their focus was on finding a location where innovation and forward thinking were integral to the environment, and found it at the Hub. "We wanted to align ourselves with other companies that push for innovation, invention and cutting edge technology, and we felt that The Innovation Hub had the right positioning for us."

"The Hub has a certain touch to it. It says 'this is innovation' and the people here are different - they are not afraid to try new things. That is the reputation that we have worked very hard to create for ourselves", says van der Spuy. He also adds that being in an environment that is filled with so many like-minded individuals creates a lot of opportunity for business collaboration. "If the companies here opened themselves up and maybe even started tendering for contracts together, we could really come up with some amazing solutions and be very innovative. I'd like to see the tenants here getting together to leverage the technology that we all have."

Going forward, LUUK will focus on building on the success of BOS with the BOS Desktop and Business Network and applications that integrate BOS with cellular technology and VOIP. "Not only have we developed most of these solutions already, but we know that they work. At this point, all that remains is to get the right partners", van der Spuy concludes.
