Oversight visit by members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature

The Innovation Hub and Blue IQ Investment Holdings recently hosted members of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Members at the Hub in Pretoria to look at developments at the Science Park and the progress that has been made since the Hub took occupation of its new site in January 2005.

Hub CEO Dr Neville Comins explains some of the initiatives planned by the Hub to further increase its impact on the Gauteng economy. Listening attentively are (ltr) Mondli Gungubele, Jacqueline Moteke, Tiragalo Mogale and Jeanette Morwane.

The Gauteng delegation was led by chairman, Mondli Gungubele and accompanied by Blue IQ representatives CEO Nomhle Canca and Portfolio Manager Zuki Potye, as well as Bongi Kunene, Head of Finance and Economic Affairs at the Gauteng Provincial Government.

Hub representatives shared information with the visitors on its economic impact on the province since inception four years ago, as well as the alignment of its activities to the province's Growth & Development Strategy. Plans to further increase its impact were also discussed. Examples include:

  • Pre-Incubation
The growth of its incubation "outreach activities", aimed at bringing more BEE companies into the main stream of the economy will help to increase the Hub's contact with next-generation entrepreneurs. This will include partnerships with tertiary education institutions such as the University of Pretoris, Tshwane University of Technology, Wits and others to establish Pre-incubation Centres for such entrepreneurs.

  • INNOV8 networked community
The growth of this high-tech community will continue to play an important role in business development in Gauteng by creating links within the broader community and with international counterparts. Expanding the community to include wider representation from the academic and research sectors, as well as emerging BEE entrepreneurs, will be a core focus in this area in future.

  • Tshwane "Smart City" project
The Hub will play a key role in Tshwane's SmartCIty and Global Hub projects in its drive to become a vibrant participant in the knowledge economy.
