Agileworks awarded contracts for enhancing scientific data dissemination
Agileworks, a tenant in the Enterprise Building at The Innovation Hub, has been awarded two contracts, one by the Council for Geoscience (CGS) for the creation of their Geoportal, and another by GIMS (Pty) Ltd for the re-development and optimisation of a crop suitability model for Institute for Soil Climate and Water (ARC-ISCW) at the Agricultural Research Council.

The CGS Geoportal will form the backbone of spatial data dissemination, and an integral part of the Council's spatial data infrastructure. Agileworks - through its leading edge web portal and GIS expertise - has developed an advanced spatially enabled content management system, which has been built on the distributed internet mapping sub-system originally designed by GMS Software and the latest version of the Plone content management system.
The Council contracted Agileworks due to advanced, robust and distributed architecture of the Geoportal, as well as its open source software foundation, open standards and security. The portal will enable CGS to share geospatial data and maps in a secure content management system. It adds seamless support for spatial servers, layers and maps.
The awarding of the crop suitability model contract to Agileworks resulted from a need at the ARC-ISCW to re-design the model for greater operational functionality within the Agis environment. GIMS was contracted for the architectural and operational enhancement of the model and sub-contracted Agileworks to reverse engineer and document the model. The aim is to develop new modern architecture and implementation that runs on Solaris 9 in a fraction of the time of the original model.
The aim is to complete the first phase of the CGS Geoportal project February next year, while the complete crop sustainability model is due to go live on the Agis website towards the end of this year.
