Bar some finishing touches to the fit-out of the two core buildings and the completion of bits of landscaping that is currently underway, the Phase 1 construction of The Innovation Hub new site has been completed. This includes the construction of a new bridge across the N1 freeway and the widening of the roads leading to and from the Meiring Naude/Cussonia intersection across the N4 freeway in the vicinity of The Innovation Hub.
The Innovation Hub Bridge - recently "officially" opened by CEO Dr Neville Comins during a ribbon cutting ceremony on the bridge - provides tenants and visitors with direct access to the site. Speaking at the event, Comins expressed his appreciation for the public's patience during the construction. "We set ourselves the task of implementing the construction of the bridge across the N1 and the upgrade to the Meiring Naude/Cussonia Roads Bridge across the N4 with as little traffic disruption as possible. With direct access now open to The Innovation Hub, we are confident that the improvements are benefiting not only those motorists travelling to the site, but all other road users in the area as well," he said.
On the site itself, all internal roads have been completed while the signage and road markings will be in place by the end of January. Final touches to the façade of The Innovation Centre have been done, while the finishing to the building's Koppie Room - with a magnificent view of the natural hillside on the site - is nearing completion.
The IT voice and data installation has been signed off and the air-conditioning system is fully operational, while the last bits of landscaping at the bridge and along the freeway is underway. The equipment for the on-site bistro, which is located in the Innovation Centre, has been delivered and the shop fitting is in progress. In addition, the interiors of the building's auditorium and conference rooms - intended for use as shared facilities by tenants and visitors - will be fully operational by the middle of February, when the facilities for the Property Owners' Association will also be ready for occupation.
According to Comins, "Delivering high quality workmanship within the required deadlines to enable this complex project to remain on schedule has taken tremendous teamwork, involving the contractors and all our other stakeholders. We sincerely thank them all - their unstinting effort over the last months have provided us with a fully operational Science Park ready to do business".
