Tsietsi Maleho

Jeanette Morwane

The African ICT Achievers Awards, affectionately known as the "Oscars" of the ICT sector, continues to grow year on year. This year, the adjudication interviews took place early in October 2004. Tsietsi Maleho, Corporate Affairs Manager at The Innovation Hub, who has been part of the adjudication panel for the past four years, and Jeanette Morwane, Corporate Affairs Support, participated in the awards process as judges.

ForgeAhead, in partnership with the Department of Communications, started the Black ICT Awards in 1999 with aim of recognising and honouring excellence amongst black ICT companies and professionals. In 2001, a decision was taken to broaden the scope of the competition to include representatives from across the African continent, including the Islands of Mauritius and Reunion. Appropriately, the event became known as the African ICT Achievers Awards.

Adjudicators include prominent individuals from ICT companies and journalist who have written extensively on the sector, while the judging process is audited by KPMG. The adjudication process entails an initial web-based evaluation of CVs of nominees, followed by interviews between the finalists and the judges. The criteria for passing muster as a finalist for the awards are based on the ICT charter and whether companies meet BEE objectives.

The Innovation Hub's interest in the awards is to honour IT professionals who make significant contribution to the ICT sector. It is also aligned to the aim of the maxum Business Incubator at The Innovation Hub to provide an enabling environment where start-ups from the knowledge-intensive sectors including information and communications technology, biosciences, electronics and advanced materials and manufacturing, are fast tracked to compete in the business world.
