TCI Manufacturing CEO scoops prestigious award
Mthembeni Mkhize, CEO of TCIThoreb (Pty) Ltd and Executive Chairperson of TCI Holdings, was recently announced as the winner of the Black Business Quarterly (BBQ) magazine's Businessman of The Year Award for 2003. The event, which celebrates black business performance across a number of categories, was held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Friday, 7 November 2003.

With this award Mthembeni joins the company of business stalwarts such as Finance Minister Trevor Manual and African National Congress deputy secretary-general Sankie Mahanyele, who respectively received the BBQ Statesman and Stateswomen of the Year Awards. SA Tourism CEO Cheryl Carolus was given the prestigious Platinum Award, which is presented without nomination.
TCIThoreb, a public transport technology company, recently graduated from the pre-incubation programme at The Innovation Hub to join its high-tech business incubator. The company was launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2001 through the signing of a memorandum of intent with Swedish-based Thoreb, an IT company specialising in the transportation field. TCIThoreb provides computerised electrical systems and real-time information for the transportation industry. Its products have major safety benefits for public transport commuters.
The company recently received an International Quality Accreditation Certificate from DQS, a leading German Quality Systems Auditing Company. "Acquiring international quality accreditation for management practices and manufacturing was a priority, as this is a requirement for us to manufacture locally, but operate internationally," says Mthembeni.
He tackled the task of preparing the submission by himself without the help of consultants. And as part of TCIThoreb's commitment to ongoing improvement, he is currently preparing for an Environmental Standard Specification Accreditation (ISO 14001) and the ISO TS 16949, which is the latest version of technical accreditation.
