HOW 2 ... series of business support events for Hub Incubator tenants

Launched recently for the benefit of tenant companies in the Business Incubator at The Innovation Hub, the How 2 ... series of business support events is an innovative initiative designed to strengthen the opportunities for learning. The first How 2 ... event was facilitated by Rudi van der Walt, the CEO of Technovent, who led a session titled How 2 Start Branding Yourself.

Seen at the launch of the How 2 … series, ltr, Mthembeni Mkhize [TCI-Thoreb], Sam Ramela [Moloko iClass], Jill Sawers [TIH], Emil Saayman [CoachLab], Dr Rudi van der Walt [Technovent], Dr Walter Smuts [Expertron] and Fulton Ramaphakela [Moloko iClass].

Well attended by the tenant companies, who participated enthusiastically in a strongly interactive discussion, this event proved to be an ideal launch platform for a series that is destined to add considerable value to start-up technology companies on their journey to being the giants of tomorrow. A second How 2 ... has also taken place, and dealt with the issue of partner selection.

The goal of the How 2 ... series is to provide regular facilitated round-table sessions during which a recognised field expert leads an interactive discussion on a topic of particular importance to businesses in the early stages of their life cycle.

The format allows participants the opportunity to engage with the facilitator and one another, to benefit from the collective experiences of all and the perspectives most appropriate and useful to the growth of their own businesses.

"It is generally understood that small businesses constitute an increasingly important component of any modern economy. They generate jobs, provide economic opportunity and flexibility and boost economic output," says Jill Sawers, Incubation Manager at The Innovation Hub.

In the knowledge economy paradigm, this is specifically true of small technology-orientated, high-tech or knowledge intensive companies. According to Jill, "the learning to emerge from our pilot operations to date is that starting a new technology business is not easy. It presents its own unique set of challenges and requires knowledge and skills, or access to such knowledge and skills."

This is why The Innovation Hub has placed such emphasis on developing its own Business Incubator programme. It has created a strong learning environment that supports start-up and growing high-tech companies by putting in place a networked community of technology-orientated innovators and entrepreneurs who share interests, common goals and activities. Such sharing of resources, ideas and problem-solving processes enable these companies to draw on the combined talents of many.

The results that we are seeing today from the companies that have passed through our doors bears testimony to the success of this important programme. It is exciting to witness start-ups capturing the moment of opportunity and manoeuvring their businesses onto the road of success. This makes the objective of The Innovation Hub Business Incubator, viz: creating an empowering environment that facilitates the emergence and growth of technologically innovative start-ups, all the more worthwhile" Jill concludes.

The next How 2 ... event is scheduled for mid October and will focus on the detail of negotiating agreements.
