The Innovation Hub's presence at the Challenge was made visibly by a succession of teardrop banners, information packs and the Hub team members sporting branded sweatshirts and peaks and handing out Hub water bottles. |
A Challenge with spirit and magic
The Blue IQ Jo'burg City Challenge, celebrating Nelson Mandela's 85th birthday and the official opening of Nelson Mandela Bridge that links the Johannesburg suburbs of Braamfontein and Newtown - took place in festival style at the end of July this year.
In the spirit of true sportsmanship, The Innovation Hub was there in full force to make its presence felt and provide moral support to those participating in the wide range of fun events - from the half marathon and 10km road race, to a fun run, an event for wheelchair athletes, a run for children and a celebrity street mile for invited star track athletes.
The corner of Bezuidenhout and Jeppe Streets became the Hub corner, distinctly branded with "teardrop" banners and Hub team members sporting branded T-shirts and peaks. Information packs were handed out to media representatives, who converged on the Hub corner to partake of the braai and good company. These packs, containing branded sweatshirts, T-shirts, water bottles and peaks with relevant information on the Hub, soon became highly sought-after items!
Top local and international athletes participated in this special event, made even more so by the prizes having been presented to the winning runners by Nelson Mandela. The prize money for the first five runners in all categories in the half marathon was comparable to that offered in some of the most prestigious races in the country.
Cheryl Carolus, Chief Executive Officer of South African Tourism, applauded the tremendous success of the event that attracted far more people wanting to 'Run for Madiba' than organisers had ever imagined.
The Blue IQ Jo'Burg City Challenge, indeed, became a day to be remembered - an occasion where the Hub team was part of a 12 000 strong energetic and enthusiastic crowd, watching superb athletic performances by those that had taken up the Challenge, and experiencing the magical presence of Madiba.
