Hub Incubator tenant collaborates internationally in virtual reality and 3D content development
Naledi3D Factory of South Africa and Swedish based Infotiv Visual Technologies have signed a memorandum of understanding that paves the way for exciting virtual reality and 3D content
development both in Africa and Europe. The agreement will focus on identifying joint projects in the
domains of industrial/vocational training as well as heritage & culture.
Says Dave Lockwood, Managing Director of Naledi3D Factory: "I believe there are great opportunities both in Africa and in Europe to make VR the training tool of choice. We have already established strong links with major South African organisations around a number of innovative projects in the areas of electricity generation, laser technology, mining, urban township renewal schemes, as well as industrial vocational training. We have also undertaken a number of projects in Europe using our Plan Communicator concept".
"Through Infotiv we gain access to a wealth of experience and technical knowledge in respect of the automotive domain, the medical care industry, the fishing industry and heritage and culture. Together we can look forward to working together on larger, collaborative projects. We have just completed a research project for UNESCO that shows how real-time simulation affects the brain and how real-time simulation can be used in the learning process. It is clear from this study that Virtual Reality is the ideal new learning environment tool due to both its visual as well as interactive nature".
Mikael Jacobsson, Managing Director of Infotiv Visual Technologies AB: "Our ambition is to develop new methods and areas of use for real-time visualisation in education and training within, for example, the spheres of health and medical care".
Naledi3D Factory has done ground-breaking work during the past few years in applying VR to specific African teaching and training needs. This includes a project commissioned by UNESCO to develop an interactive computer simulation to teach basic hygiene in Nakaseke, Uganda. The goal of the project was to prevent diseases such as malaria, bilharzia, dysentry and cholera, which are spread through inadequate
sanitation.
Naledi3D Factory is currently working on a number of new projects. This includes a project in Ethiopia that uses VR simulation and 3D content to broaden the knowledge and understanding of HIV/AIDS with a view to reducing the spread of the disease. Naledi3D is also preparing a life-skills simulation for a Johannesburg community centre to help young people prepare for, obtaining and keep jobs.
Infotiv Visual Technologies (IVT) works with real-time visualisations of new housing and office complexes as a complement to the architect’s physical models. The object is to gain a
realistic impression of how the finished areas will look. There are also projects within health and
medical care, in which visualisation applications are used to aid the planning of wards and
operating theatres with new medical equipment.
Naledi3D Factory, situated in Pretoria, South Africa is a modern, innovative company that focuses on the development of virtual reality (VR) models as a means of visualizing complex
concepts. From its inception Naledi 3D has worked with South African industry to develop
cutting edge industrial VR simulations. Naledi3D Factory is currently also carrying out projects
for Tanzania, Ethiopia and Uganda.
