Innovative applications makes public transport attractive and effective
A company that focuses on transportation IT and Intelligent Transportation Systems has now also joined The Innovation Hub's pre-incubation programme. TCI.Thoreb (Pty) Ltd is a joint venture between TCI Holdings, the Swedish company Thoreb and the Swedish South African Business Partnership Fund. Its focus is twofold: providing computerised electrical systems and real-time information for the transportation industry.
The TCI.Thoreb product portfolio consists of a number of IT systems that support a step-by-step approach to improvements in public transport. Some of these developments minimise risks associated with theft and hijackings, while others facilitate fault tracing in fleet vehicles and provide comparative passenger statistics.

CEO of TCI.Thoreb, Mthembeni Mkhize, is very excited about the company's involvement in The Innovation Hub's pilot pre-incubation programme, part-icularly about the support that is provided to develop well-defined business and marketing strategies. He believes that his company's association with The Innovation Hub as a Blue IQ project will create awareness of their transportation products amongst provincial organisa-tions.
"It will also assist in educating the local market about how effective computerised transportation systems can help to improve public transportation, with the associated benefit of making its use more attractive to passengers," he said.
TCI.Thoreb applications include an automatic fare collection system that enables the tracking of all ticket sale transactions and an automatic vehicle location system that continually logs vehicle positions, making it possible to track and monitor the movement of fleet vehicles such as buses.
Other developments by TCI.Thoreb aimed at achieving their objective of creating an attractive and effective public transportation, are systems that enable the comparison of passenger statistics with ticketing data and tailored bus-onboard information packages with automated announcements and interior displays of bus stops.
According to Mkhize, one of their developments also facilitates fault tracing in buses by utilising a very reliable electrical system that comprises a network of nodes with a single communication cable that detects faults and transfers the data to a depot computer for evaluation.
