Helping teachers to spend more time with their learners

Managing Director of Thlolo Communications, Mr Deon Morris, cannot contain his excitement about being involved in The Innovation Hub's pre-incubation programme. As a software developer, he recognised the need in schools for teachers to spend less time on administration, and to devote more time to their primary task of educating the children of the nation.

With more than 4 000 schools in Gauteng alone, a significant number of teaching hours are spent on essential administrative tasks such as the calculation of learners' marks, printing reports, filing and general school administration. This inspired him to develop a computerised school administration system that makes life easier for teachers and enables them to concentrate on their learners' needs.

This project is already well into the developmental phase. Six schools in the Vaal Triangle are using the system as a pilot project and almost all the initial problems experienced have been ironed out. The feedback received from the teachers who are using this system has been very positive, and a countrywide launch of this product is in the pipeline. Other products are also being developed, including an access control system that will enhance security at schools.

The Innovation Hub is assisting the company to develop a business plan and to conduct feasibility studies and research that will help to ensure the successful launch of its product in the market place. Mr Morris sees his association with The Innovation Hub as an opportunity, not just to develop his software products, but to contribute to the development and upliftment of education in the country.
