Hub Progress Sheet

The development of The Innovation Hub is nearing the detailed design and implementation stage. Progress so far includes:

  • A Master Plan for the infrastructure development is nearing completion.

  • The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) was submitted to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Conservation, Environment and Land Affairs and a Record of Decision received.

  • Technical studies have been handed in to the relevant authorities including traffic, bulk services, preliminary geotechnical reports and the urban design rationale.

  • A number of pilot activities have been launched at The Innovation Hub's temporary premises in Pretoria, including a high-tech business incubator operating with five early stage companies, some of which are working on international contracts, have shareholding by significant local players and won a design award for an innovative new product.

  • A pilot ITCoachLab, as part of the Hub's overall CoachLab Leadership Programme, is in its second year of operation with five post-graduate students working on real-time industry projects under mentorship of experts from industry and two graduate students contributing web development skills and two interns as part of an outreach programme. Partners in the ITCoachLab are Epi-Use [Pty] Ltd, the University of Pretoria and The Innovation Hub.

  • Black Economic Empowerment initiatives include a pre-incubation programme from which two participants are currently benefiting and a procurement strategy that encourages the involvement of BEE contractors.

  • The Request for Information (RFI) for Design Consultants process closed on 5 August and the 50 submissions are currently being adjudicated, from which a short list of potential contractors will be drawn up.

  • Advanced discussions with prospective tenants are ongoing.
