Progress Sheet: Business activities and core infrastructure

The conceptualisation of The Innovation Hub, based on extensive international benchmarking, has now moved into the detailed design and implementation stage. Added-value business activities and state-of-the art infrastructure are key success factors and market differentiators.

The need for the Hub to become operational, simultaneously with the infrastructure development, resulted in the establishment of the Hub's pilot activities in temporary premises on the CSIR site in Pretoria. As part of these activities, a pilot Business Incubator is operational with six resident companies currently employing 20 people. Discussions are underway with other potential companies to enter the Incubator.

The site

The Hub's positioning on a prime tract of land in the executive capital of South Africa will anchor it to a unique 'knowledge axis' with close links to surrounding research, academic and commercial capacity.

The Hub's infrastructure development process is proceeding well, with the rezoning of the proposed site top of the agenda. The Master Plan for the development of the site has been completed and evaluation of all aspects of the infrastructure development by The Innovation Hub Board is ongoing. Once the land is released and a number of technical matters addressed, procurement for the development of the infrastructure will commence with a Request for Information process.

A Record of Decision on the Environmental Impact Assessment has been received and processes are in place to commence with prospective tenant involvement.
