Where smart is – is where Smart Young Mindz are
The Smart Young Mindz Alumni Club is a development CSI initiative of BlueIQ Investment Holdings that aims to keep track of the annual SYM winners in terms of their progress in school. As a member of the Alumni Club, learners are offered an opportunity to be exposed to different activities geared to expose them to the world of science and technology. The association members remain ambassadors of the competition for the remainder of their school years. The objectives of the club include keeping track of the SYM competition ambassador’s performance up to tertiary level and beyond; to provide learners with activities that will encourage them to choose careers in the science and technology industries, and to provide mentorship to the learners who will be taking part in the programme. At present the Alumni Club has 15 members all of whom are last year’s winners. Each year the club will grow with 15 new members. These new members are the winners of that particular year. BIue IQ decided on The Innovation Hub to expose the learners to the world of science, technology, innovation and entrepreneurship. As a science park, the Hub is fulfilling a key role in nurturing commercial and technological innovation and it also offers an excellent opportunity for showcasing different kinds of careers that exist in the science and technology industries. The members are all very positive about the visit as they were able to interact with the professionals at the following companies: SP Smart (a South African provider of information and communication technology solutions for businesses, governments and other organisations), Icexpress (leaders in prosthetic technology making use of bionics, artificial intelligence and advanced materials) and Jabula (experts at Geographic Information Systems (GIS), videography and image processing). The learners are scheduled to visit other institutions such as The Johannesburg Observatory, Forensic Science Laboratories, Resource Centres, etc.
