BioPAD, a Biotechnology Innovation Centre is an institution established in 2001 by the Department of Science and Technology to fund the development of biotechnology in South Africa to improve business competitiveness, accelerate strategic alliances and promote investments in the regions.
To accelerate their growth BioPAD has introduced Bioforums, quarterly network seminars with the aim of encouraging collaborations and greater co-operation between all those involved in the process of biotechnology innovation. While they have always targeted biotechnologists, researchers, scientists they have broadened their scope to accommodate business people to grow investments opportunities.
This quarter’s meeting was held on the 15th April 2008 at the SAPPI conference centre and to deliver the keynote address was Professor Angus Kirkland, Head of Materials from the University of Oxford. He spoke topic on the Nanotechnology Flagship Programme. Nanotechnology is a field of applied science and technology that involves the control of matter at a nano scale.
Nanotechnology is an emerging science in South Africa stakeholders who attended the seminar were exposed challenges of commercialising the technology as well as possible solutions to grow the technology in a commercial environment.
BioPAD prides itself in bringing its stakeholders informative seminars presenting opportunities such as information dissemination and networking and ultimately bridging the Innovation Chasm.
